Non-urgent advice: Important Information to Read Ahead of Your Appointment

Thank you for booking your coil fit/change appointment. Please read the following information before your appointment:

Please continue your current contraception until your appointment, so that we can ensure there is no risk of pregnancy before the fit. You will be advised on when you can safely stop your other contraception. Withdrawing the penis before ejaculation (sometimes called the withdrawal method) is not an effective way to avoid pregnancy and is not recommended.
Your clinician is unable to proceed with the insertion of the coil if there is any chance of pregnancy. To ensure there is no risk of pregnancy, we recommend you do not engage in intercourse after your period until the coil has been fitted/changed. If your coil is being changed, please abstain from intercourse in the 7 days before your appointment.
Please let us know if you have had any new partners so we can assess the risk of an STI.
We also recommend that you take paracetamol/ibuprofen 1 hour before your appointment.

Non-urgent advice: What coil do you have, and when can it be changed?

There are now a few types of hormone coils. Make sure you know which one you have.

If you are unsure of which coil you have, and when it can be changed please refer to the guidance you were given at the time of fitting.

If you have misplaced your card with the dates on, please check on the NHS app when it was fitted, or send a message to our Care Navigators who can check for you - Contact us about your request (accurx.com)

Mirena*	If used for HRT - 5 years	Kyleena	5 years
	If used for contraception - 8 years		(not licensed for HRT)
	If fitted when age 45 or older, can stay until age 55

Jaydess	3 years	Benilexa	If used for HRT - 5 years
	(not licensed for HRT)		If used for contraception - 8 years

Copper Coils	Most can stay for 10 years, unless you have been told otherwise

*Changes to the license now allow for the Mirena coil to be used as a form of contraception for 8 years. However, if you are also using it as part of HRT, then it still needs to be replaced at 5 years. If you are unsure, please book an appointment to discuss with a GP.

Non-urgent advice: How do we exclude risk of pregnancy before a coil fitting/change?

Your clinician is unable to insert a coil if there is any risk of pregnancy. Healthcare practitioners can be reasonably certain that an individual is not currently pregnant if any one or more of the following criteria are met and there are no symptoms or signs of pregnancy:

You have not had intercourse since the start of your last normal (natural) menstrual period, since childbirth, abortion, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or uterine evacuation for gestational trophoblastic disease.
You have been correctly and consistently using a reliable method of contraception. (For the purposes of being reasonably certain that an individual is not currently pregnant, barrier methods of contraception can be considered reliable providing that they have been used consistently and correctly for every episode of intercourse. The withdrawal method is not a reliable form of contraception.)
Your are within the first 5 days of the onset of a normal (natural) menstrual period.
You are less than 21 days postpartum (non-breastfeeding individuals).
You are fully breastfeeding, amenorrhoeic and less than 6 months’ postpartum.
You are within the first 5 days after abortion, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or uterine evacuation for gestational trophoblastic disease.
You have not had intercourse for >21 days and have a negative high-sensitivity urine pregnancy test.
