Dr Richard Russell

GP Partner, Deputy Medical Director - BSc, MB ChB, MRCGP

Following the completion of my Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Science at St Andrews University, I went on to study Medicine at the University of Manchester. I then worked in Stockport and Lancaster before moving to Australia where I spent 2 years working in mainly emergency and rural medicine. I returned to England and moved back to Manchester where I worked in an emergency care rotation. I joined The James Cochrane Practice as a Locum GP for a period of 6 months, before joining the practice as a Partner in 2007.

GP Partner - MB ChB, MRCGP

After studying Medicine at Manchester University, I graduated in 1998 with initial ambitions of working as either an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon, or an Orthopaedic Surgeon. I spent several years working in a variety of hospitals across the North-West including 2 ½ years of Surgical training in Blackpool. It is from this experience that I realised my love of patient contact in an out-patient setting and decided to pursue General Practice. I commenced my GP training in Lancaster and qualified in 2005. I then worked as a GP Locum across the South Lakes area before joining The James Cochrane Practice as a Partner in May 2007.

Salaried GP -

Originally from Bolton, I trained in Manchester, qualifying in 2003, and completed my GP training in Salford in 2011. I’ve worked all around Manchester, and initially undertook surgical training, including some time working in surgical departments at both Furness General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary. However, as time went on I felt that perhaps a career in General Practice would be better. I have recently relocated with my family to Cumbria from Manchester, having reached a point in my life where I craved a good view; and given that we often spent much of the Summer travelling up to go walking, camping or festivalling, it made good sense.

Emily studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and worked around Glasgow as a Junior Doctor for a couple of years. Looking forward to being nearer to the Lake District, she began her GP training at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, before joining the James Cochrane Practice team with whom she will be completing her training. In her spare time, she enjoys hill walking with her family.

Dr Maria Martin

GPwER Dermatology - Salaried GP - MB ChB, MRCGP, Dip. Faculty Family Planning, Dip Practical Dermatology

I grew up in South Africa, and studied medicine at the University of Cape Town. I then moved to the UK and did my GP training in South West Wales. Following the completion of my training I moved to the beautiful Lake District where I joined The James Cochrane Practice as a Partner in 2001. I have been so fortunate to have been with the James Cochrane Practice since the start of my career as a GP. The practice has given me many opportunities to build on my clinical and consultation skills, however, the time has come for me to make a change and from June 2019 I shall no longer be a GP at the practice.  I will continue to be involved in the South Lakes GPwER Dermatology service, which is run by the practice. I continue to have a keen interest in Dermatology and I have also spent many years working in this area for the Westmorland General Hospital.
