About The James Cochrane Practice
The James Cochrane Practice takes care of the community in Kendal and the surrounding areas. We operate 2 surgeries, Helme Chase Surgery situated in the South of the town and Maude Street Surgery situated in the North. We provide GP and nursing appointments at both sites and can dispense medication to patients living more than 1.6 kilometres outside of Kendal, within our Practice boundary.
We are strongly committed to the future of General Practice and support a host of nursing and medical trainees.
Dr James Cochrane started the practice in 1913 practising from a small building at the corner of Maude Street; he was joined by his brother, Dr Alec Cochrane in 1918. In 1927, a small purpose built surgery was built which was situated where our Maude Street Surgery stands today. The practice continued to grow with the formation of the National Health Service in 1948, and the linking with a neighbouring practice in 1958.
In 1995, the James Cochrane Practice purchased the former Helme Chase Maternity Home on Burton Road in Kendal; the building was converted into a surgery to our own specifications and opened as a second site, the Helme Chase Surgery as we know it today.
Car parking for patients is available at Helme Chase Surgery.
Please allow extra time to park as spaces are limited and fill up quickly during peak times, and you may need to find alternative parking off site.
Patients needing to park their vehicles to attend Maude Street Surgery will find on road or multi-storey car parking nearby.
The practice was last inspected by the CQC in November 2016, you can find our full report here CQC 2016
Publication of Earnings
All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings (e.g. average) for GP’s working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.
The average pay for GP’s working in the James Cochrane Practice in the last financial year before Tax and National Insurance was £52,342, this is for 1 full time GP, 9 part time GP’s and 0 locum GP’s who worked in the practice for more than 6 months.
It should be noted that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time doctors spend working in the practice, and should not be used to form any judgement about GP earnings, nor to make any comparison with any other practice.
