Shortage of blood vials nationally – Updated 22/09/21

Patient Update 22/09/2021

Following guidance from NHS England, primary care settings are able to resume blood tests as normal including routine requests and long term condition reviews.

Please note that there may be a delay in these routine requests as we work through the backlog that the vial shortage caused.

We thank you for your patience with this matter.

URGENT PATIENT NOTIFICATION –  Shortage of blood vials nationally across hospitals and GP surgeries

Dear patient,

You may already be aware through reports in the National Press, of the supply chain shortage of the glass vials used for blood testing.

NHS England have advised that all GP Practices must postpone primary care blood testing, with immediate effect and until 17th September 2021 unless the requested test is clinically urgent.

Our clinical team are reviewing all blood test clinics during this period to determine which tests can be safely delayed and we will be contacting patients to cancel appointments where necessary.

We will advise patients when their blood tests can be rescheduled, once we receive information that the situation has changed.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, however these are circumstances out of our control.
